I commented to begin with because the way the excerpt from the article was presented it was not immediately apparent that Lamar Smith doesn't seem to support the current research funding system . I just wanted to raise awareness, but it seems many are already aware.I am glad to know that there are more people concerned about the issue and working to prevent this draft of the bill from becoming law.

We need to look at HOW the money is being spent. Right now academia is addicted to cheap exploitive labor. WAKE UP PEOPLE. Its time to stop this craziness of post-docs that know no end. The issue here is that there is a logjam and surplus of scientists and engineers. Meanwhile the moguls and top academics are begging for more, more, MORE! The system is hopelessly broken and both academia and industry need a 12-step program to get them off the cheap labor sauce. I left the field when I saw the logjam getting worse and when I realized the people sweeping the floors had higher salaries and better benefits than I did.

We don't need more scientists or even more engineers. We have thousands of unemployed and underemployed people right here who would be DELIGHTED to find gainful employment - at REASONABLE SALARIES. These people may be a bit older, but they are perfectly capable innovative scientists. The only problem is that they understand how their bread is buttered and (GASP!) may need a living salary and (GASP!) might require a minor tweak here and there on their training since many have abandoned their fields since they couldn't get more than a post-docs pay.

But academia and industry are addicted to cheap labor from abroad. They crave that slave who is willing to respond to the "green card whips" by working 12-14 hours a day for less than $40k a year. This isn't employment - its exploitation and the commoditization of highly skilled, highly talented professionals.

As to the corporates or the higher ups saying they need more STEM education and begging Congress to allow more foreign VISA holders...CRY ME A RIVER - and look to yourselves. You are part of the problem. Now grow up - show some patriotism and start employing the people who are already here.

There are loads of young electricians job seeking these days, the number
of applications I am receiving lately is overwhelming. If you are looking at becoming an electrical engineer these
days then you should decide upon a specialist area of
interest, by doing this you will find there's much less job competition and also you typically get a larger salary!

Heya fantastic blog! Does running a blog similar to this require
a lot of work? I've absolutely no understanding of computer programming however I had been hoping to start my own blog in the near future. Anyway, should you have any suggestions or tips for new blog owners please share. I know this is off subject but I just wanted to ask. Thanks a lot!
